Discovering Self Psychotherapy

Online Therapy
Online therapy offers a supportive, accessible way to engage in meaningful therapeutic work—wherever you feel most comfortable. Sessions are held virtually, allowing you to explore your thoughts, emotions, and lived experiences from the privacy of your own space.

This page is here to help you understand how online therapy works, what to expect, and whether this format feels like the right fit for you.
How does online therapy work?
Online therapy is similar to in-person therapy in both structure and intention. Instead of meeting in an office, we connect through a secure video platform called Jane, from a space that feels safe and grounding for you.

Jane’s integrated video system is compliant with Canadian privacy legislation, meaning your information is protected through secure and encrypted technology. The focus of our work remains the same: building a collaborative, thoughtful therapeutic relationship that supports insight, growth, and self-understanding.

How do I join my session?

You’ll receive an email approximately 30 minutes before your session with a secure link to join.
• At your scheduled time, I’ll join the video call and our session will begin.
• If you’re joining from a mobile device or tablet, you may need to download the Jane app.
• If you’re joining from a computer, the link will open directly in your browser.

Once you’re logged in, you’re all set.
Tips for a supportive online experience
A few small preparations can help you get the most out of your sessions:

1. Choose a private, comfortable space
Find a spot where you feel safe to speak openly—whether that’s a quiet room, your car, or another space that works for you.

2. Check your technology ahead of time
A stable Wi-Fi connection, working camera, and headphones (if helpful) can support a smoother experience.

3. Minimize distractions
This is your time. If possible, silence notifications and let others know you’re unavailable during your session.

4. Give yourself a few minutes to settle in
Arriving a little early can help you ground, take a breath, and transition into session with intention.
Benefits of online therapy

Many people find online therapy to be a flexible and supportive option, especially when balancing busy or demanding lives. Some benefits include:
• Greater accessibility and convenience
• Increased consistency when attending sessions
• Reduced barriers for those who feel anxious about in-person therapy
• Flexibility for individuals living in rural or remote areas
• The ability to engage in therapy from a familiar, comfortable environment
For many, meeting virtually can make it easier to open up and feel at ease.
Limitations to Online Therapy
While online therapy is effective for many concerns, it’s important to understand its limitations:
• Some non-verbal cues may be harder to notice virtually
• Technology issues (internet disruptions, video lag) can occasionally occur
• Online therapy may not be appropriate for more acute or high-risk situations that require in-person support
• Privacy can be more challenging in shared living environments
If at any point online therapy doesn’t feel like the right fit, we can talk through alternative options and next steps together.
